Myths
'Only the outside of my building is listed'
- Wrong! All of the building, inside and out,
and most buildings and structures in the grounds are part of the listed building.
'I don't need permission to put things back
the way they were when it was first built'
- Wrong! All work which changes the building
will need consent.
'I can alter the inside of a Grade II listed
building without consent'
- Wrong! No matter what grade the building is,
if the works affect the building's character, you will need to apply for Listed
Building Consent.
'Because my house was built in the seventeenth
century I can remove parts added'
- Wrong! Often later alterations are just as
important because they show the development of the building. Their removal usually
needs consent.
'Now my house is listed, I can't do anything
to it'
- Wrong! You will only need to apply for Listed
Building Consent in order to satisfy your legal obligations.
