Listed Buildings - grants
Some limited grants are available for certain
works to listed buildings although these are not easy to obtain especially in
domestic situations. English Heritage targets grants to cases of real need and
where a building will be used in a way which will ensure its permanent survival.
There are grant schemes for:
- Urgent major repairs
to nationally important buildings, scheduled monuments and registered parks and
gardens
- Repairs to buildings
in conservation areas where English Heritage runs a Conservation Area Partnership
scheme or a Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme with the local authority
- Local authorities to
underwrite Statutory Notices
- Emergency works to Listed
Buildings
- Buildings at risk at
any grade in London and for funding conservation plans or feasibility studies
- Repair of listed war
memorials in conservation areas
- London squares
- Places of worship
These guidelines are drawn very tightly and
in general, most listed buildings are not eligible for grants. In particular,
applications from private householders to perform what are essentially routine
maintenance works are not viewed favourably.
One other important financial consideration
however is that VAT
may not be payable on works carried out to a listed building under certain circumstances.
